Pathogenic microorganisms can adhere to the intestinal mucosa and influence cellular tight-junction function, leading to diarrhea. In an in vitro study, it was compared the protective efficacy of a combination of gelatine tannate plus inactivated probiotic (Tasectan® Duo) with that of other widely used antidiarrheal agents (Diosmectite, Saccharomyces boulardii, and a probiotic mixture). The study results clearly show that the protective efficacy of Tasectan® Duo manifests early and is maintained for 24 h. This effect is quicker and lasts longer that with the other compounds evaluated. These data further reinforce the potential broad utility of Tasectan® Duo in the management of diarrhea of several causes (e.g., infectious gastroenteritis, antibiotic therapy and chemotherapy) in population groups of all ages.
